EFCC releases statement about VeryDarkMan's arrest

The Economic and Financial Crime Commision of Nigeria has released a long awaited statement regarding the arrest of social crder, VeryDarkMan or VDM. Here is the statement as seen on the X account.

The EFCC’s post, titled “EFCC’s Case against Martins Vincent Otse,” begins by asserting its mandate to tackle economic and financial crimes. According to the agency, Otse was invited multiple times to respond to petitions alleging financial malfeasance, but he failed to honor the invitations. The EFCC emphasizes that these allegations are “grave” and cannot be ignored, positioning the arrest as a necessary step in its investigative process.

The statement acknowledges Otse’s public criticisms of the EFCC, describing his attacks as “unguarded” and “condemnable.” However, the agency insists that his arrest was not a retaliatory move but a response to the petitions against him. It also notes that other law enforcement agencies will investigate Otse’s criticisms separately.

Legally, the EFCC claims it obtained a remand order to hold Otse in custody, a standard procedure for suspects under investigation. The agency adds that Otse has been offered administrative bail, which he can access upon fulfilling the required conditions.

The statement concludes by appealing to Nigerians to allow the EFCC to carry out its duties “without fear or favor,” promising that charges will be filed once investigations are complete.
